But the movie she's made gives little indication that she understands teen girls, dramatic or plain. When a reformed Stu comes to New Jersey looking for Lola, she promptly lectures him about the evils of drink. This one stab at dark humor soon gets candy-coated. Because everybody at the table is broke, he gets a doughnut instead, which he promptly throws across the room, hitting the cop who hauls them in. In the only scene that made me laugh out loud, Stu demands a cheeseburger and onion rings at the diner where the girls bring him to sober up. Adam Garcia is very funny as Stu, who turns out to be far from the inspired artist of Lola's fantasies. Lola and Ella have been arrested along with Sidarthur's lead singer, Stu, whom they rescued from a trash heap. Later that night, the girls are escorted to a police station that seems like a friendly community center with New York's finest lounging around and not a drug dealer or hooker in sight.
The venue for the concert is no Madison Square Garden - the entrance looks like the way into a school auditorium. But Lola's beloved city bears no resemblance to the real thing, probably because this small-budget movie was shot in Toronto. Lola drags her new friend, Ella, to New York to hear Sidarthur. She considers herself beyond the innocents of suburbia, yet inexplicably latches onto the most straitlaced girl in class. Lola is supposed to be a sophisticate who is dragged kicking and screaming from New York to suburban New Jersey. Lohan shows a lot of spunk, and she might have saved this movie if her role had been better developed. Fox's way of expressing Carla's anger at Lola is to distort her face in an overly broad sneer, as if she were in a silent film. By contrast, Carol Kane is overly exuberant as a drama teacher. Glenne Headly is mouselike as Lola's single mom. The actresses in "Confessions" lack Curtis' comic flair. Lohan was winning in "Freaky Friday," in part because she had Jamie Lee Curtis as a foil. She's a few years past 15, and her voluptuous figure makes Lola's lack of beaus even harder to explain. At one point, she turns up in a mini-skirt and thigh-high white boots a la Nancy Sinatra in her "These Boots Were Made for Walking" days. Lola's closet is filled with bizarre ensembles more suitable for a drag queen than a drama queen. The girls are, however, wild about clothes. In Disney's sanitized version of teenage girls' lives, they get crushes on rock stars, while attainable boys are viewed as gofers, not somebody you're aching to make out with. I was 15 once, and boys loomed large in my universe. Lola and Carla squabble over the lead in a school musical and tickets to a Sidarthur concert, but there's no boyfriend to have a real catfight over. Here's the weird part: There's no Archie. The rich-bitch brunette is Carla (Megan Fox), whose claim to fame is that her lawyer dad represents the rock group Sidarthur, which Lola happens to be gaga over.
